Created in 1970, following congressional passage of the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, NPR is part of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides television programming under the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

The mission of NPR is to work in partnership with member stations to create a more informed public - one challenged and invigorated by a deeper understanding and appreciation of events, ideas and cultures. A privately supported, not-for-profit membership organization, NPR serves a growing audience of 26.8 million Americans each week in partnership with more than 966 independently operated, noncommercial public radio stations.
