The current student radio station at Cedarville University began as a discussion in January of 1979 among professor Wes Baker and a couple of students, including Jim Leightenheimer. The need for a station that would allow broadcasting students to use the knowledge and skills that they were developing in the classroom in a practical setting was apparent. Jim Leightenheimer became a faculty member ...in 1982 and began working to build support to bring the station into existence. On April 5, 1990, Professors Baker and Leightenheimer, along with station manager Bobby Hile (Class of ’90), signed WSRN (The Student Radio Network of Cedarville College) on for the first time. Operating at 530 AM from the top of Collins Hall, WSRN served students with eight hours of programming a day. In 1996 WSRN signed off and U99.5 FM signed on with a much higher quality signal and with expanded broadcast hours. In the Fall of 2000, U99 moved into new facilities in the Stevens Student Center and began streaming its signal via CedarNet 24 hours a day and seven days a week. In 2007, after spending a year researching how the current student body is using media, U99 concluded operation and was re-launched as Resound Radio. Resound features a 24/7 stream that can be heard worldwide online at resoundradio.com and, in addition, offers on-demand programming targeted specifically at the student body of Cedarville University. The station has been a great training ground for over 500 students since 1990. Many station graduates cite their experience with student radio as being an important part of their preparation as managers, account executives, producers, announcers, news and sports casters, as well as helping numerous students from many majors refine their communication skills.
