KRUU-LP 100.1 FM [www.kruufm.com] is community radio, pure and simple. The focus on locally-created programming is reflected in our program schedule. Featuring some 80 weekly shows, 98% of our programming (by time) is produced by local volunteer hosts and/or former members of this community who contribute from their current locations. The one exception being Free Speech Radio News, a half-hour i...nternational news program. On September 9, 2009 at 9am, KRUU became the first solar-powered radio station in the Midwest. Inspired by KRUU's vision as a media center, the project was almost entirely donated by leaders in the local green movement, individuals, businesses and organizations, coming together to create this milestone for Iowa and the greater Midwest. KRUU's commitment to community also extends to the software and systems that are in place at the station. All the computing infrastructure uses only Free software (sometimes termed Open Source software). The Free in this case is in reference to freedom, and not cost-\-\all the software comes with the underlying source code, and we contribute all our changes, edits and suggestions back to the Free software community. The reasons for using Free software go far beyond the scope of cost. KRUU wishes to build local knowledge using systems that do not impose restrictions or limitations on use. To this end we support software that is distributed under a "copyleft" or "open" license. Our use of free/open sourced software is convenient. But KRUU is an active contributor back to the "open" revolution. All programming created at KRUU is released under a CreativeCommons-Attribution-NonCommercial-2.5 license. This means that anyone is permitted to redistribute, re-air, and re-sample our content, as long as it is not used in a commercial endeavor, and that our content creators are given credit for the work. KRUU's community agenda has been helped greatly by the work of local permaculture students and experts. The grounds around KRUU display a food commons using the principles of permaculture, including raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and more. See More

Community radio at its finest, solar-powered KRUU helps brand Fairfield's creative, cultural, entrepreneurial and sustainable elements.
