See more mission has always stayed the same: To provide our listeners with music and programming that they can’t hear elsewhere in Columbia, SC. Sure we maybe eccentric, a little crazy, and sometimes completely off the map but that is what makes WUSC, WUSC. A Brief History of WUSC 1947: WUSC goes on at a frequency of 640k.c. and is provide via a carrier signal into USC dorms. The station plays "middle of the road" music. Music that has seen some success but hasn't hit the corporate stations yet. 1971: WUSC switches to a more progressive format 1977: At 8a.m. on January 17 WUSC began broadcasting at 90.1FM 1982: WUSC boosts it power and becomes 90.5FM 1986: WUSC named one of the best college stations by Rolling Stone magazine 2003: WUSC begins streaming it's signal online. 2006: WUSC installs the first HD transmitter in South Carolina allowing it to broadcast a digital signal and HD content simultaneously. Our Format: * Commercial free: This means you’re never going go hear 15 minutes of music then 30 minutes of commercials on WUSC. * Free-format: This means you’ll always hear a fantastic mix of musical artists and genres. * Non-top 40: This means you’ll never hear any of the same old music you hear on every other station. About our Shows: Unlike other radio stations, WUSC’s DJs get to choose the music they play on their shows. WUSC features two types of shows, Free-Format and Specialty. Free-format shows feature 50% new music that we receive from artists and labels and the other 50% chosen by the DJ spanning 3 genres. Our Specialty shows focus on one genre or topic. Over the years WUSC has seen many specialty shows. We’ve had shows dedicated to Americana, Blues, Metal, Jazz, Bluegrass, Prog Rock, Electronica, Hip-Hop, Ska, Punk and many more. What does WUSC offer its DJs? WUSC is an educational station. Not only do we educate our listener but our DJs as well. By being a member of WUSC our DJs gain experience in the fields of Public Affairs/Public Relations, Music Journalism, Radio Broadcasting, Audio Production, Management. Not only that our DJs are exposed to new musical artists and genres. They also get to meet tons of like minded people and make new friends. How Do I Get Involved? Any USC student, faculty, or staff member is eligible for membership at WUSC. WUSC holds Interest Meetings at the beginning of every fall, spring, and summer semester. Following the interest meeting are two weeks of training and after completing all the requirements, new DJs sign up for time slots. Info about these meetings will be posted on this site, announced on the air, and on fliers posted around campus.

We have been around since 1946. Currently we boast a 24/7 schedule that broadcasts at 2500 watts. When you tune into WUSC you will hear music and programming you cannot find anywhere else. We are free-format, Non-Top 40, and provide many specialty programs as well. Each semester there is something new.
